Project Reveal: A Colorfully Layered Home

Project Intro

When my client approached me, she was frustrated with the layout and look of her home of many years. She wanted to transform, upgrade and make her space feel more sophisticated, but didn’t know where to start. Located in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY, she was looking for a coastal, yet unique aesthetic.

The scope of work involved full renovation and furnishing/décor of the entire first floor, including the removal of existing walls, new flooring, lighting, and complete kitchen & powder room renovation.

The Design Process

The first step was to develop a design concept that captured my client’s preferences and personality. We exchanged images and ideas, until we were able to visualize a clear style and direction. I was thrilled to learn of her love of color and willingness to think outside of the box!

Inspired by my client’s sense of adventure, we decided on a playful, modern and coastal style — layered with cozy textures and unexpected pops of color. My team and I developed drawings, mood boards, 3D renderings, a detailed list of products and physical samples so she could touch and see the finishes.

Once my client made final approval on the selections, we put together a detailed furnishing proposal, and proceeded to purchase all products. The next stage involved expediting and coordinating all deliveries to our receiving warehouse, where each item was inspected and securely stored until install day.

The Construction Process

After meeting with contractors and obtaining a few estimates, my client hired Anthony Literello from Showcase Construction to handle the renovation. My team and I produced a set of construction drawings and specifications so Anthony and his trades had clear instructions to follow. After the demo started, we were pleasantly surprised to find a web joist ceiling supporting the second floor. This allowed us to open up the space, without the need for pesky columns!

Once the walls were removed, we installed an L-shaped waterfall bar/counter between the kitchen and living area, to create a brighter, more efficient, open floor plan.

We replaced the existing tile and carpeting with white oak floating wood flooring throughout the entire space, including the kitchen, to create a cohesive feel. We worked with Schwamb Electric to install all new recessed LED lighting and beautiful, handcrafted pendants.

My client loves to cook and entertain, so we worked closely with Babylon Cabinet Co. to custom-build new kitchen cabinets to meet her functional needs. As a nod to the Mediterranean, one of my client’s favorite travel spots, we chose a cobalt blue Moroccan Zellige tile backsplash and fresh green base cabinets.

Anthony and I worked together to design a more intentional, custom built-in fireplace surround, wrapped in light-colored stacked stone — including niches for the firewood and wall-mounted TV, and concealed wiring.

As in any design & renovation process, the project had its unique challenges along the way, such as product delays due to the Pandemic and budget considerations. However we were able to communicate clearly and come up with concrete solutions to ensure my client was entirely satisfied with the outcome.

The Final Product

One of my favorite features of this project is our blush fabric accent wall from Studio Zen Wallcoverings, adorned with two custom asymmetrical mirrors from that add movement and character to the space.

We chose comfortable, deep seating, so my client and her family can easily curl up and enjoy time together. For the furnishings overall, we combined contrasting materials, such as wood, linen, concrete, wool and raffia to produce a unique, yet soft, refined and sumptuous environment.

And let’s not forget the powder room! Fun, beachy, with blue walls and palm wallpaper accent wall, and a custom-designed wood and ceramic vanity from Canco’s Tile. Such a gem, and absolute transformation.

The Happy Client!

Now that the project is complete, I would like to share a heartwarming quote from my client:

I was living in a space that was outdated and tired. I was ready for a change but didn’t know exactly what that might look like. Thanks to Alejandra, I now live in a space I am excited to walk into - one that feels cozy, sophisticated and modern. Put your trust in Alejandra! She asks the right questions to achieve your goal. Leave the rest to her.” - Karen G.

This is music to my ears! My client now feels happy, uplifted and relaxed in her space — and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to help her in this process.
